On March 4, 2025, at the age of 92, Shirley Gertrude Mullens Carter passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Ashland, Va. Formerly of Buchanan, she retired from Mill Creek Child Care Center and together with her husband operated Old Stone Church Antiques. All those who knew her loving referred to her as “MeeMaw”.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Chester L. Carter; her father, Thomas Mullens; mother and stepfather, Maude and Clifton Clemons; sisters, Noami Mullins and Virginia Ellis; brother, Harold Mullins; brothers-in-law, Joy Carter and George Dooley; and sisters-in-law, Jane and Betty Carter.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Larry and Tina Carter of Roanoke and Michael and Carman Carter of Buchanan; her daughter and her husband, Cindy and Joe Williamson of Ashland, VA; three grandchildren, Travis (Lexie) Carter, Allison (Matt) Oyler and Elizabeth (Andrew) Thompson; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Nancy Dooley; and numerous brothers and sisters in Christ.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with Pastors Darren Meadows and David Petty officiating. Interment will be private.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jennings Creek Gospel Church, PO Box 427, Buchanan, VA 24066.
