Elizabeth Ramelle Mattox Provost, 75, of Buchanan, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Carson Mattox, Jr. and Nelna Hester Mattox.
Elizabeth graduated from Gretna High School and Radford College, she taught at Madison, Eagle Rock, and Buchanan Elementary Schools for over 28 years. She was also influential with the children with the 4-H Lamb Shows and The Fincastle Fall 5k Run. She attended nursing school and was a 40 plus year member of the Buchanan Rescue Squad serving as Cardiac Tech and as Treasurer. She was also member of the Buchanan Presbyterian Church and served with the Buchanan Food Pantry. After the Flood of '85 Liz and Charles were instrumental in the Town of Buchanan's Luminaries during Christmas Eve celebrating the comeback of the town after the flood.
Survivors include her husband of 43 years, L. Charles Provost; sister, Sue Mattox of Hurt; brother, E. C. "Skip" Mattox, Auburn, Maine; in-laws, Katie Loope, Jane and Andy Huff, and Preston Wickline, all of Buchanan; nieces and nephews, Candace and Patrick Monaghan, Kristi and Wayne Porter, Bradley Wickline and Tyler Walke, Brent and Kendra Loope, Lacey and Matthew Brown, Troy Huff, Sara and Ricky Ryder; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 pm on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the Buchanan Presbyterian Church, 19559 Main Street, Buchanan, Virginia. A memorial service celebrating Elizabeth's life will follow on Monday, August 10, 2026, at 10:00 am also at the church, with Pastor Donna Hopkins Britt officiating. Inurnment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Buchanan, Virginia.
