David “General” Russell Palmer, 76, of Fincastle, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Murray and Marie Palmer. Born February 27, 1950 in Staunton, he graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and went on to service in the US Marine Corp. He was a teacher, a carpenter, and a furniture maker passing along his education and talents to many people.
Working for the Department of Corrections, David started his career as a correctional officer in the Staunton Correctional Center and was then promoted to Basic Correctional Officer Trainer at the Department’s Staff Training Center-Academy for Staff Development. He was later promoted to Supervisor of BCO and then became Supervisor Manager of Upper Supervisor and Management Training.
David was a living historian, as portraying General Robert E. Lee in numerous performances at schools, educator groups, reenactments including the Smithsonian and Virginia’s Civil War Museum. He was also a farmer loving all God’s creatures with magnificent horses as his greatest love.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Patricia Peck Palmer; sister-in-law, Susan Gibson; brother-in-law, Jack Peck; and numerous cousins, friends, and fellow reenactors.
